WHAT SHOULD I READ TODAY?

Between my social media feeds and my in box there is no shortage of options.

So here is my filter. What should I read today that may make me better at what I do? That may make me understand your point of view? Or that may just be interesting to me? I really don’t want your reading list any more than I want your grocery list. So before you retweet the same article as 50 others stop to consider the value you are adding. Chances are I already read it. And so did most others. If you have a point-of-view, let me here it. If an article supports it, tell me how. Be relevant. Reward me for my effort. Make my life better. And I will try to do the same. Now what should I read today? Over.

DESPERATION MARKETING – OUR CARS WON’T KILL YOU

In efforts to combat flagging luxury car sales, Mercedes has decided to flag a different aspect of their brand: Safety.

Huh??!!

What’s next, Volvo’s going to counter their slipping sales with a new campaign featuring their performance?

I suppose their reasoning is that people already know M-B makes great luxury cars, so they wanted to tout something else.

Let me tell you something. The reason everyone knows M-B makes the best luxury cars is because their advertising has reinforced it all these years. Keep this up, and people won’t even know what M-B stands for. Luxury? Safety? Low monthly payments?

Remember, once you have your brand message, don’t depart from it! Even though you’ve spend years hammering it out, and you’re sick of it, the consumer is not. And when you change brand messages, trust me, consumers won’t remember your old one, and your original investment is lost. Does anyone remember McDonald’s tagline before “I’m lovin’ it?” Thank you.

TWINKIES GO ON A DIET

Hostess Twinkies are becoming the latest product remade and repackaged into 100-calorie snack packs, a product some analysts say could do well given that more people are packing their own lunches in the slumping economy.

“It’s no secret people want to have their cake and eat it, too. Long known for its loyal following of sweet toothed stoners and slacking college students, Hostess is making a pitch for the health-conscious and the monetarily-strapped with its new 100-calorie Twinkie packs. Will it be successful? It’s unlikely finicky salad eaters will be turning over their leaves in favor of a snack typically associated with an inactive lifestyle, but traditional lunch toters just might put down that bag of chocolate chip cookies for an old favorite. It just better taste like that old favorite when it hits their slimmed down lips.”

HOW DO YOU LIKE THEM APPLES?

Apple Computer is publicly opposing Proposition 8 in California, which prohibits equal rights and benefits to employees with same-sex partners, by making a donation of $100,000 to the “no on 8” campaign. Apple was among the first California companies to offer equal rights and benefits to their employees’ same sex partners, and they “strongly believe that a person’s fundamental rights – including the right to marry – should not be affected by their sexual orientation.” Apple views this as a civil rights issue, rather than just a political issue.”

“Good for Apple. They made computing easy for the masses and now they’re making it easier for same-sex partners to get equal rights and benefits.”
